Investment whisky insurance and storage

The world of whisky has seen tremendous growth in recent years. Whisky, and especially Scotch single malt whisky, is no longer just a popular drink. In the meantime, it has also become a valuable investment object. What is the reason for this? The rarity of the whisky in combination with the great potential for value increase. However, as with any other investment, it is crucial to protect your investment. Two important aspects are therefore the insurance and storage of the whisky. In this blog, we will discuss how you can best manage these facets to maintain and, better yet, grow the value of your investment whisky.

Why is the right storage so important?

Whisky is a sensitive product. The way it is stored can therefore have a significant impact on the quality and ultimately the value of the whisky. There are a few essential factors to consider when storing whisky. For example, the temperature and humidity of the drink must be carefully considered. Store whisky in an environment with stable temperatures, preferably between fifteen and twenty degrees. Is the temperature too high or too low? Then the chemical composition of the whisky can be changed, which can lead to a loss of quality. The same applies in principle to humidity. Is there too much moisture? Then mold can form on the cork or the label. Too little moisture, on the other hand, can cause dehydration and/or evaporation.

Another important factor is the light. Whisky bottles should be kept away from sunlight. The reason? UV radiation can affect the whisky, causing discolouration or a change in taste, for example. The best option is therefore to opt for a dark storage space or a special cabinet with UV protection. In addition, keep in mind that whisky, unlike wine, for example, should always be stored upright. This is because the high concentration of alcohol in whisky can affect the cork if the bottle is horizontal for too long. This can damage the seal, potentially exposing the whisky to air. Obviously, this is not the intention and can ultimately reduce the value.

Choose professional storage facilities

Are you a serious investor? Then we recommend using professional storage facilities. Facilities with a specialism in the storage of (investment) whisky. These facilities provide you with a number of assurances, giving you the peace of mind that your investment is safe. Think, for example, of climate control. Professional storage facilities ensure the right temperature and humidity level, minimizing the risk of quality loss.

In addition, these facilities are often equipped with good security systems to prevent theft and, although whisky is safe in such a professional place, it is also important that it remains accessible for inspection or sale. Professional facilities are familiar with this and you can often count on it to be in order.
